There is now compelling evidence that global warming is a reality and will affect many tourism destinations. Increased temperatures through climate change are predicted to have a dramatic effect on the snowsports industry, with concerns over ski fields retreating and seasons shortening. We must do everything to reduce our carbon emissions and slow down climate change.
Tourism makes a contribution to climate change, with the emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) through air travel and ground activities (for example, accommodation and road transport). Tourism is predicted to grow rapidly and so is a major source of concern for governments, environment organisations and the media. Future policy and legislation could include increased taxation and compulsory emissions trading and we will certainly see an increasing focus on operational efficiency.
Companies operating in destinations need to do everything they can to minimise the environmental impact of their business and reduce carbon emissions.
